A Canberra Photographer's Honest Answer
There's a question we hear more than any other from expecting parents: when should I book my newborn session? The short answer is earlier than you think. The longer answer involves a bit of biology, a bit of scheduling reality, and a few things most photographers won't tell you upfront.
After 15 years of photographing newborns in our McKellar studio, we've learned that timing affects everything. Not just the quality of the images, but how relaxed the session feels, how smoothly the day runs, and how much you actually enjoy the experience instead of stressing through it.
Here's what we wish every expecting parent knew.
Book During Your Pregnancy, Not After the Birth
The single most important piece of advice we give expecting families is to get in touch during pregnancy, ideally around the 20 to 30 week mark. Not because we need months of lead time for planning, but because our calendar fills up and your baby won't wait for a convenient gap.
Newborn sessions need to happen within a specific window after birth. If you wait until your baby arrives to start looking for a photographer, you're searching, comparing, and deciding during the most sleep-deprived, overwhelming week of your life. Most parents who call us after the birth say the same thing: I wish I'd sorted this out months ago.
When you book during pregnancy, we pencil in a tentative date based on your due date and adjust once your baby arrives. There's no penalty for being early or late. Babies rarely follow the plan, and we expect that. What matters is that your spot is secured and there's one less thing to think about when the day comes.
The 5 to 14 Day Window and Why It Matters
The ideal age for posed newborn photography is between 5 and 14 days old. This isn't an arbitrary number. In the first two weeks, babies are still in what photographers sometimes call the "sleepy phase." They sleep deeply, curl naturally into those tucked-in poses, and transition smoothly between setups without fully waking.
After about three weeks, babies become more alert. They stretch out more, startle more easily, and resist being placed in curled positions. Sessions with older newborns are absolutely still possible, but they take longer, produce fewer posed images, and require more patience from everyone in the room.
There's also a skin consideration. In the first two weeks, most newborns have smooth, even skin tone. By three to four weeks, baby acne often appears, which is completely normal but can mean more retouching time in post-production. Shooting earlier gives us cleaner images straight out of camera.
We occasionally photograph babies up to six weeks old, and the results can still be beautiful. But the sweet spot, the window where everything aligns — deep sleep, natural flexibility, smooth skin, calm temperament — is that first fortnight.
What About Premature or NICU Babies?
Parents of premature babies sometimes worry that they've missed the window. You haven't. For prems, we calculate the session timing from the original due date, not the birth date. A baby born four weeks early at 36 weeks will typically be ready for their session around what would have been 37 to 38 weeks gestational age, which often falls two to three weeks after birth.
For babies who spend time in the NICU, we wait until they're home, settled, and feeding well. No session is worth rushing a baby who's still adjusting. We've photographed babies who came home at three weeks, four weeks, and even later. The poses may look slightly different from a five-day-old session, but the images are no less meaningful. In some ways, they carry even more weight because of the journey that family has been on.
If your baby has spent time in hospital, just let us know when you're ready. We'll make it work.
How Far in Advance Do Canberra Photographers Book Out?
This depends on the time of year and the photographer's schedule, but in Canberra, most experienced newborn photographers book at least four to eight weeks ahead. During peak periods, which tend to be late spring through early autumn (September to March, following the predictable spike in births nine months after the colder months), we can book out further.
We accept a limited number of newborn sessions per week because each one takes two to three hours of studio time plus post-production and in-house printing. Keeping our numbers manageable means we never rush a session and every family gets the unhurried experience they deserve.
If you're reading this and your baby is already here, don't panic. Call us. We'll do everything we can to fit you in, even on short notice. It just helps enormously when we have the lead time to prepare.
What Happens Between Booking and the Session
Once you book, not much is expected of you until your baby arrives. A few weeks before your due date, we'll send a short preparation guide covering what to bring, what to wear, how to time feeding before the session, and how to keep your baby comfortable on the drive to our McKellar studio.
About a week before your session, we'll have a 10-minute phone consultation. This is where we learn about your preferences: colour palettes, themes, whether siblings will be joining, and any specific ideas you have in mind. Based on that conversation, we prepare a custom selection of handmade props, wraps, and outfits from our collection of over a hundred pieces. Everything is washed, pressed, and laid out before you arrive.
On the day, the studio is pre-heated to 26 to 28 degrees and ready for your baby. All you need to bring is your baby, a change of clothes for yourself if you'd like to be in photos, and whatever you need for feeding. We provide everything else.
A Note About Safety
Every parent considering newborn photography should ask their photographer about safety training. Newborn posing involves specific techniques for supporting a baby's head, neck, and limbs, and certain popular poses are actually composites that require careful handling and post-production to achieve safely.
Dragana holds a Newborn Safety Guidelines and Assessment certification from Kelly Brown, one of the world's most respected newborn photography educators. This training covers safe posing techniques, temperature management, hygiene protocols, and proper newborn handling throughout every stage of a session. Your baby's safety is never secondary to getting a particular shot. If a pose isn't working, we move on. There's always another beautiful option.
You can read more about what happens during a session in our detailed guide, including how we handle feeding breaks, sibling involvement, and the complete journey from session to finished prints.
